“Mother?” he asks, peering up at her.

Moojag turns to me and whispers loudly, “Triple dose.” I lift my hand to brush away the sound and cover my ear.

“Yes, dear. I am Deirdre, your mother. You’ve been a very naughty boy, haven’t you?” That’s weird. Why would she call his mother ‘Deirdre’? Her mum’s name. My great grandmother. Has she forgotten who he is again?

“I didn’t do it, Mother,” he whispers, pointing to Brix. “It’s him.”

“It isn’t kind to blame other people,” says Sophia.

“Why don’t you get out of bed and go play,” suggests Gran.

Aldon tries to get up, but he can’t move. He can barely even lift his head. “DON’T BE SO LAZY!” shouts Stella.

“I’m not,” whimpers poor Aldon, “I can’t!” I know I shouldn’t feel sorry for the man, but he looks so weak now. Not at all the nasty piece of work he was before. He turns and lifts his arm to guard his face.

“You ought to be ashamed,” says Gran, pulling his bed cover back down. “Letting yourself go like this.” She points to his middle. “Just look at that.” What exactly are we looking at?

“I know,” laughs Stella, “and the hair. Well, what’s left of it!” True, there isn’t much of that.

“He looks like a shrimp,” adds Sophia, giggling. Hmm. How does he look like a shrimp?

“Perhaps not a shrimp,” says Gran. “More like a gigantic blubber whale.” Aldon’s long face drops even lower and he begins to cry. Does he really deserve this? Poor blubber whale, though, being compared to Aldon!

“He’ll pay for what he’s done,” says Stella. “What goes around comes around, kid.” Wow. It’s hard telling who’s Conqip and who’s not now!

“I haven’t done anything, I promise,” he says.

“Well, quite,” says Gran. “And you won’t,” she adds, crossing her arms. “In fact, you’re going to achieve nothing special whatsoever in your life. You’re not only lazy; you’re rude, selfish, greedy, not to mention hideous, and much, much, too tall.” Okay, now that’s going too far.

We step away from the bed as Aldon leans over, retching. His face has turned a corpse-like pale. Moojag pulls a handkerchief from his waistcoat pocket and passes it to Gran. She wipes the vomit dribbling off Aldon’s chin and shoves him back up onto the bed.

I don’t remember Gran ever being quite so cruel. She doesn’t mean any of it, I’m sure. She’s a very good actor, though. They all are.

“I’m sure he’s sorry,” I say.

“I’m sure he’s not,” says Stella, crossing their arms. “He’ll stay here until he’s learned his lesson and is ready to do some honest work.”

Aldon gazes at Gran. She nods as he lowers his eyes. “I’ll be good, I promise,” he says, sobbing. “Don’t mean to be rude. Ever so sorry, Mother.” He makes a lot of promises, doesn’t he! I wonder how many promises he’s actually kept in his entire life.

“So you should be…” says Gran, popping yet another pill in his mouth, “sorry. Now, get some rest, and if you’re a very good boy, we’ll be back soon with another treat for you.
